Alaska Highway. Company C and A.
Born: 26 March 1916, Columbus, Muscogee, GA. Died: 8 October 1976, Dekalb County, GA. Enlistment and discharge dates are unknown. He went to college for four years.
Second Lt. Gordy was assigned to Company C with the segregated 97th Engineer Regiment. They landed in Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th Engineers built the northern section of the Alaska Highway.
He was with Company C from April 1942 to July 1942 when he was promoted to 1st Lt. As a 1st Lt. he was assigned to Company A and in June of 1943 became Commander of Company A.
His father was Schley Gordy, Sr (1888-1977) and in 1930 census was listed as a contractor. His mother was Sallie Cole Gordy (1892-1970).
On 27 July 1939, Schely, Jr, married Carol Cabaniss in Pensacola, Florida. In the 1940 census he and his wife were living with his wife’s parents. He worked as a contractor with specialty in Bridge and Pipe construction.
After his Army service, he was the General Manager of Schley Construction Company, specializing in public works, and his father was a partner.
