
Alaska Highway. Company H&S and D.
Born: 26 October 1918, Altoona, Blair County, PA. Died: 6 May 2015, York County, PA. Enlisted: 22 March 1941, Harrisburg, PA. Discharged: 28 January 1946.
He graduated from Camp Hill High School and in 1940 he graduated from State University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Agronomy.
Second Lt. Dunlap was with H&S Company of the segregated 97th Engineer Regiment. He and the 97th landed at Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th Engineers built the northern section of the Alaska Highway.
Second Lt. Dunlap was with H&S Company from April 1942 to August 1942 when he was assigned to Company D. He was with this company from August 1942 to June 1943. He was promoted to 1st Lt in May of 1943 and one month later became Company D Commander.
Wally worked 39 years in sales and marketing, with a five year interruption for military service, when he retired in 1984 from Agway/Eastern States Farmers Exchange. He then took a 2 year job as Field Coordinator with the Pennsylvania Association of Farmer Cooperatives.
In his youth he was an Eagle Scout with 2 Palms and continued with his love for scouting as a Cub Scout Pack Master, Troop Scout Master, Explorer Post Advisor and several other positions.
He was very involved with church and church organizations as well as local councils on business and human services development.
His father was R. Bruce Dunlap employed as the Bureau Head of State Agriculture and Social Welfare. His mother was Mildred Ride Dunlap. During a 15 day furlough from the Army and Alaska, he married Sarabell Anna Shirin “Shirm” on 23 February 1943 in Harrisburg, PA. She was a graduate of Pennsylvania State and worked as a home economics teacher for Northeastern High School.
