The Salem News, Ohio article, 30 March 1967 “…Roy Dickerson, 55, Dover, KY., drowned in the Ohio River Wednesday when he fell from his boat while catching mussels near this Brown County town.”
Enlisted: 8 December 1941, Ft. Thomas, Newport, KY. Education: grammar school. Civilian occupation. In 1940 census he was a road laborer. His father was Hubert Dickerson 1886-1968. He worked as a farm laborer. His mother was Daisy Dickerson 1886-1978.
Pvt Dickerson was a member with the medical detachment assigned to the segregated 97th Engineers. They arrived at Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. The 97th Engineers built the northern section of the Alaska Highway. Both returned to Camp Sutton, NC September 1943 and their next assignment was Milne Bay, New Guinea, Philippines.
