The segregated 97th Regiment landed in Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th built the northern section of the Alaska Highway. Lt. Farrell came to the Highway in July of 1942. He was assigned to Company C. In July of 1943 he was promoted to 1st Lt.
His father was Edward Farrell, a boiler worker and machine operator in an electric factory. His mother Hazel F. Rectenwald also worked in the electric factory doing repairs. His spouse was Hilda L. Farrell.
