He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was assigned to the Corps of Engineers. He was Company D commander with the 93rd Engineer Regiment. In 1942-43, this engineering unit built the middle section of the Alaska Highway, over 240 miles.
After completing the Alaska Highway, Col. Lowry arrived at Chilkoot Barracks in Haines Alaska from emergency leave in U.S. on 21 January 1943. He was assigned the H&S Company Commander from 21 January 1943 to 20 August 1943.
Captain Lowry with the 93rd Engineers departed from Chilkoot Barracks on 18 February 1943 and arrived at Ft. Randall, Cold Bay, AK on 27 February 1943. Ft. Randall is located on the Alaska Peninsula, the Aleutians. He was on Special Duty as 209th Port Commander (TC) from 21 August 1943 to date of departure of the 93rd from Ft.Randall.
His father was John Tate Lowry (1891-1962) and his mother was Floride Gardiner Lowry (1891-1975). He married Martha Jayne Honea of Crystal Lake, Illinois on 15 April 1945, Pierce County, Washington. Lt. Donald Schmitt, Lowry’s tent mate during construction of Alaska Highway, was one of the witnesses to the marriage.
Lt. Squires when interviewed stated that Lowry used to be an Alabama Highway Patrol. He rode a motor cycle [which I am sure he did not do in Yukon]. Sam loved to show off tricks with the motorcycle at the motor pool. Lt. Squires succeeded Lowry as Regimental Transportation Officer.
