Education: four years college at University of Illinois. Civilian occupation: Engineer and in 1946 he was an instructor of engineering at Rutgers University, NJ.
The segregated 97th Regiment landed at Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. The 97th built the northern section of the Alaska Highway. First Lt. Morgan arrived to the Highway in July 1942. He was assigned to Company A. In February 1943, he was assigned to the first battalion headquarters and in June of 1943 he was promoted to Captain.
His father was Newlin D. Morgan, Sr, born in Pennsylvania. He was a engineering professor at the University of Illinois and rose to the position of Assistant Dean of Engineering. His mother was Sylvia M. Troemper, born in Illinois.
The 1953 Wyoming city directory records Morgan, Jr as a Professor of Engineering at the University of Wyoming. In 1953 he was promoted from Major to Lt. Colonel in the US Army Reserves. He married Rosa Lee Christal, of San Antonio, Texas, on 15 June 1946.
