His spouse was Helen Ocko Altman (1908-1995), a teacher. Jacob and Helen were married on 27 December 1936.
Lt. Squires of the 93rd described Dr. Altman as a very short man, shorter than Col. Johnson. Jacob’s father was Isaac and his mother was Libby and both were born in Russia.
A New York Times article dated Oct. 20, 1981 reported Dr. Altman’s death. “A 78 year old physician was found dead-bound and gagged- in his office in Midtown yesterday evening. He was found by a relative at 6:30 pm in his office. The cause of death has not been determined and there are no suspects…Because he was gagged police believe he was target of a robbery.”
Departed from Chilkoot Barracks, Haines, AK on 18 February 1943 and arrived at Ft. Randall, Cold Bay, Aleutians, Alaska on 27 February 1943. Regimental surgeon from 26 January 1943 to date of departure of unit from Randall. Promoted from Capt. to Major on 5 June 1943.
