The 97th Regiment with Pvt. Haywood Blue landed in Valdez, Alaska on 29 April 1942. Three feet of snow covered the ground. This regiment built the northern section of the Alaska Highway. Pvt Blue was in Company B.
He served as a military policeman in Berlin, Germany in the 547th Engineers, 505th and 307th Regiment. During the Korean War he was assigned with the 347th Regiment.
Education: he was educated in Wilson County Schools and graduated from A and T in 1958. He worked with the state of North Carolina until his retirement in 1982. His father was Dan Blue, a laborer on a WPA project. His mother was Mary Eva Roberson Blue. Spouse: LaRuth Oclee Patterson Blue (1929-2013).
