
African American. Alaska Highway. Chaplain. H&S Company. Born: 7 January 1910, Wheeling, West Virginia. Died: 1 January 2000, Gainesville, FL. Enlisted: 21 October 1941 and discharged 23 July 1945.
Education: He graduated from Washington Dunbar H.S. In 1930 he graduated from Morgan State University and in 1933 graduated from Yale School of Divinity. In 1941 he received his Masters Degree from Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University.
After WW2 he was the Associate Pastor and Director of Christian Education at St. Marks Church, Harlem, N.Y. From 1955 to 1962 he served as pastor of the Sharp Street Methodist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. On 22 July 1972, Reverend Carroll became the Bishop of the United Methodist Church.
He married Margaret Phenola Valentine (1912-1999) in 1934. She graduated from Frederick Douglass H.S. and received a BS degree from Morgan College. During WW2 she worked as an analyst for the War Department and after the war she worked as a social worker for thirty years.
His mother was Florence May Dungee (1880-1956) and his father was Julius Sylvester Carroll (1877-1952), a methodist minister.
