Alaska Highway, Medical Corps, H&S Company. Born: 27 Jul 1890 Salem, Ohio. Died: 16 Apr 1972 Bangor, Maine. Veteran of WWI and WWII. Enlisted into the Army on 6 June 1917 and released on 12 October 1945.
He graduated at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio and graduated with medical degree at John Hopkins University. In National Guard Select Military Register, he was 1st Lt Medical Corps from 25 May 1918 to 17 Apr 1919. He was in France from 27 June 1917 to 5 Dec 1918 during WW1. Worked with the American Red Cross in Germany from 6 Dec 1918 to 16 Apr 1919 and in France from 17 Apr 1919 to 11 June 1919.
He was promoted to Captain in 1933. Captain in medical corps from 24 Feb 1941 and Major 11 Aug 1941. He was discharged on 12 Oct 1945.
He arrived at Chilkoot Barracks, Haines, AK on 15 January 1943. He was the Regimental Surgeon from 3 January 1943 to 25 January 1943. He was relieved from assignment with the 93rd Regiment and was transferred to Barnes General Hospital on 27 January 1943.
He married Louise Hendee (1886-1972) from Vermont on 3 Oct 1921.
His father was George Champlin Shepard Southward, born 1843 and died 1918. George graduated from Yale in 1863 and Harvard in 1865. He was a Civil War veteran. His mother, Ada Deane, was born in 1853 and died in 1934.
