Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (Fairbanks, Alaska) 13 August 1942. “Soldier Succumbs to Shot Wounds.” Army authorities today announced the death at Ladd Field Hospital yesterday of Private Charles V. Vance, 21, colored, of an engineers road crew, brought to the hospital earlier this week from Slana, Alaska, suffering from gunshot wounds. He will be buried at two o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Ladd Field Cemetery. Company E will furnish the pallbearers, guard-of-honor and firing squad, with Corporal Hart playing taps. Chaplain Orville Odom will officiate. Vance is survived by his mother Mrs. Elsie Vance of Philadelphia, Pa.
